Ghoraghat Upazila



Ghoraghat Upazila (DINAJPUR district) with an area of 148.67 sq km, is bounded by NAWABGANJ and PIRGANJ (Rangpur) upazilas on the north, PANCHBIBI and GOBINDAGANJ upazilas on the south, PALASHBARI and Pirganj upazilas on the east, HAKIMPUR and Nawabganj upazilas on the west. Main river is KARATOYA; Laldaha Beel is notable.

Ghoraghat (Town) consists of 3 mouzas with an area of 5.07 sq km. The town has a population of 3390; male 53.16%, female 46.84%. The density of population is 669 per sq km. The literacy rate among the town people is 34.9%.

Administration Ghoraghat thana was established in 1895 and was turned into an upazila in 1984. The upazila consists of 4 union parishads, 115 mouzas and 111 villages.

Archaeological heritage and relics Tombs of Shah Ismail Ghazi and Badre Arefin, Mosque at village Chargacha (Mughal period).

Population 84279; male 51.77% and female 48.23%; Muslim 86.77%, Hindu 7.27%, Christian 1.97% and others 3.99%.

Main occupations Agriculture 42.54%, agricultural labourer 29.15%, wage labourer 3.49%, commerce 12.56%, service 3.44%, others 8.82%.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 26.1%; male 32.8%, female 19.2%; educational institutions: private college 3, private high school 13, primary school 90, madrasa 31 and BRAC conducted school of non-formal education 29.

Cultural organisations Club 10, cinema hall 5, and 1 literature study group 1.

Religious institutions Mosque 213, temple 6, church 1, tomb 8.

Land use Cultivable land 4992.27 hectare; fallow land 40.47 hectare; single crop 5%, double crop 82% and treble crop 13%.

Land control Among the peasant 25% are landless, 24% small, 32% medium, 19% rich; per capita cultivable land 0.16 hectare.

Value of land Market value of land of first grade is Tk 4500 per 0.01 hectare.

Main agricultural crops Paddy, wheat, potato, onion and garlic. Extinct and nearly extinct crop Sugarcane.

Main fruits Watermelon, mango, banana, jackfruit.

Dairies, poultries Poultry 10, dairy 4.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 34.35 km, semi pucca 20.25 km and mud road 218 km.

Traditional transport Palanquin, boat, bullock cart, horse carriage. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct.

Cottage industries Goldsmith 10, blacksmith 30, potteries 20, wood work 40 and tailoring 50.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars 28; Dugdugi Mela and Hindu Ashtami Mela are notable.

Main exports Paddy, banana and watermelon.

NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are BRAC, ASA, Deepshikha, HEED Bangladesh and THENGAMARA MAHILA SABUJ SANGHA. — Banglapedia
